President’s Message 2019-20


Welcome to 2019-20


Wishing all our athletes, families and volunteers a very warm welcome back to our awesome club for the 2019/20 season!I also want to welcome all our new athletes and families. It has been great to see the numbers of new starters growing over the past couple of months and I look forward to seeing you all at the track across the season. I personally can’t wait for the season to kick off and am looking forward to my second season on the Committee and first as President.


At our AGM earlier in the year we saw only a handful of changes to the Committee, which is a really positive sign that the group works well together and also that the knowledge and passion across the committee remains, high leading to a great experience for our athletes and families.


I want to thank Katie Hamill and Chris Hancock who have given so much to the committee over the years. Both of these awesome ladies have incredibly busy lives away from the track so thank you for finding time to help the centre! You will be missed…Welcome to our new committee members, Mark Atherton (Treasurer), Tonia Berglund (co-Registrar) and Andrew Davis (Records). Thanks for joining and already bringing a lot of value to the centre.


Finally on the Committee, I want to thank Shanna for all her efforts over the last two seasons as President. Shanna fought a lot of fights for the centre and won them all. The work she has done behind the scenes is immense and has left me with some pretty big shoes to fill. Shanna has stepped away from the role as President but is still with us co-Registrar so her knowledge and passion remains!


Please remember that our committee, Age Managers and other helpers are all volunteers who are committed to the club and its members so if you have any issues at all, just come and talk to one of us and we will be sure to help.

About our Centre

Little Athletics is a great summer sport and forms the basic foundations of most sports.  It’s open for girls and boys between the age of 6 to 17 where track and field events are run every Saturday morning starting 7:40 am at Narrabeen Academy of Sports, Wakehurst Parkway.  Our Centre is made up of five Clubs:

  • Cromer
  • Manly
  • Peninsula
  • Seaforth
  • Wakehurst

Saturday competition is run by age groups and gender, so we have 22 groups (24 when our Under 6 pocket rockets join after Christmas) all competing together on an all-weather synthetic track.  Each year we have around 800+ athletes taking part which makes us one of the largest centres in NSW.

As you can imagine, there is a lot of organising involved to set up, run the weekly programme, manage age groups, record results, run the canteen and pack up each week – plus loads more in the background.

The season kicks off in mid-September running through to early-March.  A six-week alternating program runs throughout the season – check the website each week for the programme being run that week.  No regular competition is run when championships are on. These include State Relays, Zone and Regional Championships.

We also run an Inter-Club challenge with the Colbert Shield Relay Race in November, a Multi-Event in December and we find our fastest male and female athlete with the “King and Queen of the Track” 100m race in February.

Sounds busy? Well, it is – but it’s a great experience watching athletes try their best week after week and seeing the joy when they record a new Personal Best (PB).

Our track-side technology is one of the leaders in Little Athletics NSW and has progressed season upon season to support our high athlete numbers.  Bar-coded bibs are used for race finish scanning and along with a tablet for immediate field results data entry.  Results are accessible through the online results system.

All of the above is accomplished through the spirit of volunteering. The MWLAC Committee plays a role in this but it takes more than the Committee and Age Managers to make this work.  To ensure each week starts off on time, runs smoothly and safely, we ask parents complete 4 x 2-hour parent duties each season.  This forms part of the registration process with a $100 bond that is refundable at the end of season when all 4 duties have been fulfilled.

Additionally, you can sign in as a Parent Helper on the day to help Age Managers manage the athletes, usher them from event to event and help with recording results.  Kids love their parents being involved and it’s a great way to get close to the action.  (Please note: Parent Helper does not count to the four Parent Duties).

Parents are encouraged to stay and we welcome extended family and friends to come down, support and cheer on our talented athletes.  Grab a barista made coffee and let your senses be drawn to the smell of the BBQ or grab something else from a fully stocked canteen and enjoy sitting in the stand being entertained by these amazing athletes.

Remember, if you want to get closer to the action, sign up as a Parent Helper for the morning. We love the extra help and it’s loads of fun.

Training is available during the week to refine athlete skills in all disciplines.  Unlike Saturday competition day, training is run by event, not by gender or age group.  There will be different event stations set up where a coach will be there to guide, teach and help you refine your skills.  Training is not compulsory.  Go to the training section on this website for full details of training days, times and locations.
